A first edition complete two-volume set of Cesare Vecellio's seminal costume reference work published in Paris in 1860. Overflowing with beautifully detailed illustrations/engravings from every period of history and every know country. An absolutely invaluable reference for stylists and costumiers working on historical productions. These books were the property of B. J. Simmons & Co., Historical Costumiers of Covent Garden and bear a stamp to that effect on the title page of the first volume.

234 illustrated plates in Tome 1 and 300 in Tome 2 - with accompanying text in both French and Italian explaining each of the lovingly researched costumes.

First edition. Hardcover. Published by Firmin Didot in 1860.

Unpaginated. Approximately 500 pages in each volume and over 500 costumes.

Condition: Both volumes are in good condition, sturdily bound and with very clean interiors. There is wear to the boards of both books: spine wear, rubbing, corner bends and black stains to both but especially the cover of Tome 1. There is a stamp on the title page from the Covent Garden costumiers. Mild foxing to early pages only. The interiors and 500+ illustrations are very good.
